Two pits were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1980s as earthworks on the west facing slopes west of Brookside Farm, Dunkeswell parish.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Dunkeswell but closely resemble small scale extractive pits recorded elsewhere in the survey area; very similar examples circa 700 metres to the south-west had clearly very recently been in use on aerial photographs of 1947.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as probable former extractive pits of probable late 19th or early 20th century date.
