Name:Former trackway north-east of Shute

Summary

A curvilinear earthwork or double earthwork ditch is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from 1948 and images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. It may have connected an area of extraction to the road and probably predates the mid-19th century.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A curvilinear earthwork ditch, in some places double and covering up to 7 metres across and over 400 metres in length, is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1948 and much less distinctly on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. It may have connected an area of extraction (MDV116990) to the road. The trackway is not depicted on the available 19th century mapping, and much of the area was depicted as woodland, suggesting that this predated the mid-19th century.
