A possible extraction pit of post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the south of Whitehorn’s Farm. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 56m in length by 42m in width and is situated on moderate east facing slope. It is located in proximity to an ‘Old Marl Pit’ depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map, which gives a good indication as to the likely use of this earthwork. There is, however, some uncertainty as to the nature of this earthwork and it is possible it is the result of geological action, particularly as there appears to be a natural channel off the eastern edge of the feature.
