A probable former extractive pit was visible on digital images derived from lidar data as an oval earthwork pit approximately 62 metres by 47 metres in size, on the west-facing slopes between Wilderness Lane and Broadhembury village.
The pit is depicted as woodland on the Ordnance Survey MasterMap base layer but named as Week’s Pit. The plot is depicted as a mixed broadleaf and coniferous copse on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, and listed as a plantation (plot 73) on the Tithe Apportionments for Broadhembury parish.
This might support the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the mid to late 19th century and that the woodland was established on the site of the disused pit; the establishment of woodland on such otherwise agriculturally marginal former extractive sites is a recurring theme noted by the survey. The earthwork remains largely obscured from view by dense tree cover.
