A small area of parallel earthwork banks was visible on the west-facing slopes north-east of Pitney Farm, Broadhembury parish, on digital images derived from lidar data. The banks fall within a plot (116a) listed as an orchard on the Tithe Apportionments, and depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map. The plot remained densely planted with trees on aerial photographs of 1947.
The banks are therefore interpreted as the remains of ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage, dating probably from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century, the orchard remaining in use into the mid-20th century.
The plot remains densely tree covered on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010, but might include some coniferous plantation.
