This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

Three small pits were visible as earthworks on the west and north-west-facing slopes north-east of Pitney Farm, Broadhembury parish, on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014. The pits are interpreted as probable former extractive pits. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Broadhembury or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and therefore probably passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century. The largest of the three pits, measuring circa 35 by 15 metres and centred at circa ST10850410, appears to cut the line of a possible former field boundary, also visible as a slight ditch or terrace. The field pattern in this area has been characterised as probably later medieval in date, possibly based on strip fields, As such, the pit might be cutting a boundary of later medieval date and is possibly post-medieval to 19th century in date. The pits remain visible as slight earthworks on the digital images derived from lidar data.
