Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted boundaries.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted boundaries.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 FS 2453-2454 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

A shallow earthwork hollow or terrace was visible.

Royal Air Force, 1950, RAF/541/453, RAF/541/453 RS 4106-4107 04-MAR-1950 (Aerial Photograph). SDV357845.

A shallow earthwork hollow or terrace was visible.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST1004 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A shallow earthwork hollow or terrace and three or for narrow and low banks were visible.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Four or five subtle linear banks and a ditch or terrace were visible as earthworks on the west and north-west-facing slopes north-east of Pitney Farm, Broadhembury parish, on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014. The earthworks fall within the extant field pattern, defining the break of slope on the edge of a narrow combe, and are interpreted as probable former field boundaries. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Broadhembury or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and therefore probably passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century. The field pattern in this area has been characterised as probably later medieval in date, possibly based on strip fields. As such, the linear earthworks might be evidence of boundaries of later medieval date to post-medieval date.
