Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • FIELD BOUNDARY (XV to XIX - 1401 AD to 1880 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

One earthwork ditch corresponds with a depicted boundary.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted boundaries.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 FS 2453-2454 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

Slight earthwork ditches were visible.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST1004 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

Two subtle shallow earthwork hollows or ditches were visible.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Two subtle linear ditches were visible as earthworks on the north-west-facing slopes north-east of Pitney Farm, Broadhembury parish, on aerial photographs of the 1940s and images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014. The earthworks fall within the extant field pattern, abutting doglegs within an extant field boundary to the south and the boundary of a green lane or track to the north. The south-western earthwork corresponds with a field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Broadhembury but not the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, and the north-eastern earthwork is not depicted on either historic map. The field pattern in this area has been characterised as probably later medieval in date, possibly based on strip fields. The earthworks are therefore interpreted as probable former field boundaries of possible late-medieval origin that passed out of use prior to the mid to late-19th century.
