Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A former probable extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data acquired between 1998 and 2014 as a shallow, roughly triangular earthwork pit approximately 30 by 40 metres in size on the south-east facing slopes west of Birds Farm, Wolverstone, Awliscombe parish.
The pit is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Awliscombe parish, supporting the interpretation that the pit had probably passed out of use prior to the 1850s. It is located on mudstone bedrock which might support an interpretation as a marl pit, possibly for agricultural use or in the manufacture of cob for building. The pit is located at the junction of field systems characterised as medieval in origin to the south-east and post-medieval to the north-west. This might support the interpretation that the pit earthwork is possibly of medieval date and has influenced boundaries of post-medieval to 19th century date.
It might have been associated with a possible former dwelling or farmstead located immediately to the south.
