Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Two former extractive pits were visible on aerial photographs of 1982, images derived from digital elevation data captured in 2006 and Google Earth images of 2006 as a roughly circular earthwork up to circa 50 metres across and a rectilinear pit 34 by 20 metres in size, on the south-west facing slopes below Sidling Common, east of Wolverstone village, Awliscombe parish.
The pits are not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Awliscombe parish and the apportionment describes this plot (plot 223 as arable. This supports the interpretation that the pit had passed out of use prior to the 1840s land. It is located on mudstone bedrock which might support an interpretation as a marl pit, possibly dug for agricultural use at some point from the medieval period to early 19th century.
