This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A former extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 and images derived from digital elevation data captured in 2006 as an elongated teardrop shaped earthwork almost 140 metres long on the south-west facing slopes east of Wolverstone village, Awliscombe parish.
The pit is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Awliscombe parish. This might support the interpretation that the pit had passed out of use prior to the 1840s. The main body of the pit is coincident with the point where the boundaries of three fields meet. The elongated ‘tail’ of the pit might have formed alongside the boundary dividing plots 68 and 69 on the Tithe Map, perhaps due to the pit being accessed. The field boundaries in this area have been characterised as being probably medieval in origin. The pit is located on mudstone bedrock which might support an interpretation as a marl pit, possibly for agricultural use from the medieval period onwards.
