The old Rundlestone Inn at Rundlestone junction was converted into two quarters for prison officers in 1861. These were popular with the staff as they were away from the prison garrison town of Princetown. It is still possible to see the entrance gate posts built into the boundary wall alongside the road at Rundlestone Cross. The two cottages were two-storey buildings, each with a living room and sitting room, and lean-to scullery on the ground floor and two bedrooms on the first floor. There were no services (water, gas, electricity or mains drainage) to the houses.
Stanbrook, E., 2002, Dartmoor's War Prison & Church 1805-1817, 63 (Monograph). SDV359848.
The Rundlestone Inn appears for the first time in records dating to 1814, under licensee Richard Hall.
