The remains of ridges or narrow banks were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the south-west facing slopes of a combe north-west of Birds Farm, Awliscombe parish. The narrow banks were enclosed within a small triangular plot defined by slight relict banks. These former enclosure banks were not depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe, and no part of the wider field in which they were located was depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map; the plot, (79) was listed as pasture on the Tithe Apportionments.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of former orchard boundaries and tree planting banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage, dating probably from the post-medieval period possibly to the early-19th century, but which had passed out of use and been removed prior to the 1840s.
