Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted field boundary.

Royal Air Force, 1950, RAF/541/534, RAF/541/534 RP 3059-3060 30-MAY-1950 (Aerial Photograph). SDV357615.

A linear shallow ditch and curvilinear low bank were visible as earthworks.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A curvilinear bank and linear shallow ditch were visible on aerial photographs of 1950 as a earthworks on the south-west facing slopes to the north-east of Culverhayes Farm, Wolverscombe, Awliscombe parish. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe, but the curvilinear bank falls within the wider field pattern, characterised by HLC as probably enclosed in the later medieval period, and is interpreted as the remains of a former field boundary of possible later medieval date that passed out of use by the early 19th century. The shallow linear ditch or hollow immediately to the west is aligned on the northern end of the curvilinear bank and a dogleg in the extant boundary to the north, and might also be the remains of a field boundary, potentially also of medieval to early 19th century date, but might be evidence of later, post-medieval sub-division of the field.
