Full description

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 FS 2449-2450 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

A hollow or ditch was visible as a slight and irregular curvilinear earthwork.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

A curvilinear hollow or ditch was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s and digital images derived from elevation data of 2006, on west facing slopes to the south-west of Wadhays, Awliscombe parish.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe, but do abut doglegs in extant field boundaries which fall within the wider field pattern, characterised by HLC as probably enclosed in the later medieval period. The earthwork is interpreted as the remains of a former field boundary of possible later medieval date that passed out of use by the early 19th century.
