Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Three of the four visible earthworks correspond with depicted field boundaries.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 FS 2449-2450 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

The northern and southernmost boundaries remained extant at this date.

GetMapping, 1999, 069/99, Devon County Council GetMapping/068/99 192-193 11-JUL-1999 (Aerial Photograph). SDV355855.

Curvilinear earthwork hollows were visible.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Next Perspectives, 2006, Pan Government Agreement Aerial Photograph - Digital Elevation Data, Next Perspectives APGB Elevation Data ST1303 03-JUN-2006 (Cartographic). SDV359482.

Broad but shallow curvilinear ditches were visible as earthworks.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Four curvilinear hollows or ditches were visible as shallow but broad negative earthworks on digital images derived from elevation data of 2006, on the west-facing combe slopes to north of Pomhayes farm, Awliscombe parish. The earthworks were between 7 and 20 metres wide, crossing the contours of the combe slope. The two northernmost and the southernmost of the visible earthworks correspond with field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe. This enclosure pattern in this area has been characterised by HLC as probably later medieval in date and probably based on strip fields. The northern and southernmost boundaries remained extant into the mid-20th century and were visible on aerial photographs of 1947. This might explain the narrowness of much of this relict earthwork. The northernmost earthwork ditch broadens significantly at its eastern end, closest to the road, and might incorporate the remains of a former extractive pit to the south of the former boundary, that passed out of use prior to the Tithe Survey.
The fourth relict earthwork does not correspond with any depicted boundary but due to it’s similarly to the neighbouring features is also interpreted as a former field boundary that was probably removed prior to the Tithe survey.
