Summary

The remains of ridges or narrow banks were visible as low parallel earthwork banks spaced circa 6 metres apart on aerial photographs of 1947 on the east-facing slopes immediately west of Three Corners Cottage, Awliscombe parish. The banks remained visible as slight earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The plot in which the banks were visible was depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map and the plot, (270) listed as an orchard on the Tithe Apportionments for Awliscombe. The plot was largely clear of trees in 1947. The earthworks can therefore be interpreted the remains of orchard tree planting banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage dating probably from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century, but which passed out of use by 1947. Subtle earthworks probably survive in situ.
