A road depicted on the 19th century mapping and named as ‘Site of Roman Road’ on the late-19th century OS map, appears to be visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial imagery. Two banks of approximately 1.5 metres wide and 6 metres apart are visible on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. These correspond to the edges of Roman road depicted on the historic mapping, and may have been boundary banks established either side of the pre-existing roadway. To the west of this location, on an aerial photograph taken in 1928, a wide pale cropmark is visible, roughly corresponding to the line of the road and 3.5 metres wide. Along its northern boundary a dark cropmark circa 1.5 metres wide is visible. It is possible that these cropmarks formed over the buried remains of the Roman road surface and a roadside ditch. However interpretation is tentative as these features are not visible on any of the other available aerial imagery.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project Site Visit, 19-JAN-2017 (Site Visit). SDV359588.

The earthwork banks, with a possible slight ditch between them, are visible. No agger could be identified, suggesting that it had been removed, or that the earthworks are part of a routeway of later date.
