The remains of ridges or narrow banks were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014 and aerial photographs of 2014, in two plots on the east-facing slopes west of There Corners Cross, Awliscombe parish.
Both plots were depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and listed as orchards on the Tithe Apportionment for Awliscombe parish, adjacent to and probably associated with the former site of Higher Aller Cottage and gardens.
The earthworks can therefore be interpreted the remains of tree planting banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage dating within the orchards, probably from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century. The orchard north-east of the former cottages at circa ST12310339, might have been positioned to take advantage of the shelter provided by a former extractive pit visible as an earthwork in this location. This plot had been cleared of trees and was visible as unenclosed pasture on aerial photographs of 1947, whilst the plot north-west of the cottages remained planted with trees in 1947. Both areas of banks could be seen as earthworks without tree cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
