Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with a depicted boundary.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 FS 2451-2452 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

A narrow curvilinear earthwork bank was visible.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST1203 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A narrow curvilinear earthwork bank was visible.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A low and narrow curvilinear earthwork bank was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south-east facing slopes south-west of Collyhayes Farm, Awliscombe parish. The visible earthwork falls within a field system characterised by HLC as probably of later medieval date based on medieval strip fields. The earthwork is therefore interpreted as the remains of a former field boundary potentially of later medieval date. It does not correspond with any boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe and was therefore removed by the mid-19th century.
