Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • FIELD BOUNDARY (XV to XIX - 1401 AD to 1840 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthwork corresponds with a depicted boundary.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with a depicted boundary.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 FS 2451-2452 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

A narrow curvilinear earthwork bank was visible.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST1203 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A narrow curvilinear earthwork bank was visible.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A low and narrow curvilinear earthwork bank was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south-east facing slopes south-west of Collyhayes Farm, Awliscombe parish. The visible earthwork falls within a field system characterised by HLC as probably of later medieval date based on medieval strip fields. The earthwork is therefore interpreted as the remains of a former field boundary potentially of later medieval date. The earthwork corresponds with any boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe but not the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, and was therefore removed between circa 1840 and 1890 century.
