Two extensive areas of irregularly shaped earthwork pits and irregular ground surface covering circa 280 by 50 metres, are visible on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The westernmost is depicted as orchard on the 19th century mapping, and trees are still visible here on the 1940s aerial photographs, suggesting that they were established over already disturbed ground. The eastern and larger area has better-defined pits but nothing is marked or depicted here on the historic mapping. Both areas are interpreted as the remains of extractive pits that fell out of use by the mid-19th century.
