Listed in the account books for the Widecombe and Dartmoor Charity Schools is Challacombe, where in the mid-19th century there was a community of around 200 living in a tiny hamlet, sustained by the tin mining in the area. In the 1850s and 1860s, Ann Hambly ran a school for the children at Challacombe Farm, in the loft of their barn, which was also used as a chapel.
