An extraction pit of likely post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1950 onwards, and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northeast of Hembercombe Farm. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 102m in length by 45m in width and abuts Long-go Lane along its northern edge. The earthwork is partly defined as such on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map, with a copse to the immediate north labelled as ‘Marlpit Copse’, giving a good indication as to the likely use of the earthwork. The earthwork may equally be associated with the site of a possible brickworks (MDV47211) also located here, providing a source of clay for the bricks for example.
