HER Number:MDV117397
Name:Orchard banks, at Lane End Farm, Broadhembury

Summary

Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 and 1950, at Lane End Farm. Digital images derived from lidar data appear to show the earthwork banks have been completely levelled, although the quality of the image resolution is poor here.

Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 and 1950, at Lane End Farm. An orchard is partly depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, although by 1947, aerial photographs show that the orchard has been completely cleared, exposing a series of parallel northwest to southeast aligned banks, on which the fruit trees were established. The earthwork banks occupy an area of approximately 0.22 hectares of gentle northwest facing slope. The earthwork banks are not clearly visible on aerial photographs after 1950, the site being largely obscured by tree cover of a copse. Digital images derived from lidar data appear to show the earthwork banks have been completely levelled, although the quality of the image resolution is poor here.
