Name:Extraction pit, Skinner’s Copse, Broadhembury

Summary

A possible medieval to 19th century extraction pit is visible as a large earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, within Skinner’s Copse. Given the large size of the earthworks present here, there is some uncertainty as to whether this feature is of natural origin, so some caution should be exercised.

A possible medieval to 19th century extraction pit is visible as a large earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, within Skinner’s Copse. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 206m in length by 70m in width and is situated on gentle to moderate northwest facing slope. The extent of the extraction pit is defined as a copse on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map, with partial earthworks of this feature also depicted along its southwest edge. Given the large size of the earthworks present here, there is some uncertainty as to whether this feature is of natural origin, so some caution should be exercised. The earthworks are obscured by tree cover on aerial photographs and other digital images made available to the survey.
