A group of extraction pits of possible post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the south of Smallcombe, on Wolverstone Moor. The earthworks are sub-oval in shape, measure between 18m to 35m in length and are situated on steep east facing slope. The character of the earthworks suggest they are likely fairly late in date, although it cannot be discounted that, given the presence of extensive Roman to early medieval open cast ironstone mines within the vicinity, they are much earlier in origin. The earthworks were not clearly visible on aerial photographs or other digital images made available to the survey owing to thick scrub cover here.
