Summary

Former bakehouse (now dwelling) was built around 1809 for the provision of some of the bread required for victualling the War Prison complex. fire occurred in 1812, and it was repaired by prisoners of war. It is one of Princetown’s earliest buildings.

The Cottage, Two Bridges Road. Formerly called ‘The Old Bakehouse’, this was one of the original Napoleonic War Prison bakeries.
This former bakehouse was built around 1809 for the provision of some of the bread required for victualling the War Prison complex. It was initially leased to Mr James Cooper. Richard Fillis and Martin Thomas were in occupation by 1812. A fire occurred in 1812, and it was repaired by prisoners of war.
It is one of Princetown’s earliest buildings (citing Stanbrook, 2002).
