A small extraction pit of possible Roman to early medieval date was visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the east of Wolford Cottage, Dunkeswell. The oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 17m in length by 10m in width. It is possibly a Roman to early medieval ironstone open cast mine, a dense concentration of which have been recorded in close proximity to the northwest. It may also however, be the result of small, farm scale extraction during the post-medieval to 19th century period.
