A possible Roman to early medieval extraction pit was visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northeast of Ewin’s Ash, Dunkeswell. The oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 25m in length by 16m in width. It is possibly a Roman to early medieval ironstone open cast mine, a dense concentration of which have been recorded in close proximity to the west. It may also however, be the result of small, farm scale clay or gravel extraction during the post-medieval to 19th century period.
