Name:Earthwork mound, northwest of Moor Copse, Broadhembury

Summary

An earthwork mound of uncertain origin is visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northwest of Moor Copse. It is possibly the result of natural erosion, the waste material from ironstone extraction or an unlikely barrow.

An earthwork mound of uncertain origin is visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northwest of Moor Copse. The oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 18m in length by 15m in width and is situated on gentle to moderate southeast facing slope. This earthwork is the more prominent of a number of similar mound-like features visible on lidar images within the immediate vicinity here. They are of possible natural origin, caused by the erosion and movement of soil from further uphill. However, these earthworks may also represent evidence of waste ironstone workings, a number of similar such features, albeit much better defined, having been recorded further to the east. The earthwork mound also closely resembles a prehistoric burial mound, although this seems unlikely givens its situation. The earthwork was not visible on aerial photographs or other digital images made available to the survey.
