Name: | Enclosure within Headland Warren, North Bovey |
---|
Summary
An isolated 0.45 ha rectangular enclosure on the lower western slope of Birch Tor associated with Headland Warren. The enclosure is first recorded on a map of the warren in 1797 together with six similar examples in the Redwater and West Webburn valleys. Their purpose is much debated but they are likely to have been involved with the trapping and harvesting of rabbits. The wall is built in a stout drystone tradition from moorstone remaining to 1.5m high in places. It is 98m long by 46m and the interior is slightly raised. There is no visible entrance. The stonework has collapsed in places but as a whole the enclosure is in good condition.
