Summary

A number of clay pits are depicted in the vicinity here on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, which gives good indication as to the likely function of this earthwork.

A possible extraction pit of likely post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northwest of Wellsprings Farm. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 105m in length by 37m in width and is situated on moderate west facing slope. A number of clay pits are depicted in the vicinity here on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, which gives good indication as to the nature of this earthwork. It is also located in an area where numerous similar such features have been recorded during this survey and following a walkover survey carried out in 2016 (MDV114110) associated with the A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn.
