HER Number:MDV11762
Name:Remains of Medieval Chapel, Yeovale

Summary

At yeovale remains of medieval chapel ruins of perpendicular church. Chancel with perpendicular windows, north transept, north door and south aisle are easily recognisable. Probably the chapel of yeovale house which was licenced 1375 and again 1406, and re-erected as an essay in the picturesque (pevsner). Ruins of ancient chapel removed to more distant part of grounds. A monument to william giffard who died 1400 was removed with the ruins of the chapel (lysons). Vis=17/12/1953(os) no remains of south aisle. Remains of north wall still stand. South end of walls of east and west face end abruptly and regularly. Chapel is not enclosed and no sign of residences in immediate area, and no approach roads so it appears probable that the chapel has been re-erected (os). Yeovale house had a private chapel of which the ruins may still be seen. Licence granted in 1375 by bishop brantyngham. A slab in the chapel is a memorial to william giffard, died 1400 (chope). Present ruined chapel at the corner of bulland wood seems to have been built after 1810, the farm of west heal which then occupied the site having since disappeared (rouge-et-noir). Yeo vale chapel rebuilt here in early c19 (hoskins).
