Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.
The remains of roughly parallel ridges were visible as low earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the west-facing slopes immediately east of Leyhill Farm, Upton, Payhembury parish.
The ridges were spaced approximately 6.5 metres apart and fell within a plot depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map.
The earthworks are interpreted as the remains of tree planting banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage dating probably from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century.
The orchard remains planted and the banks were obscured from view on aerial photographs of 1947 to 2010, but probably survive as earthworks.
