A large earthwork depression, covering approximately 50 by 60 metres in total, is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. It is divided into three parts, one in each of three adjacent fields, separated by the north to south aligned Hunthay Lane. The field boundaries and the road dip downwards over the site of the pit, suggesting that it pre-dates them. The boundaries are in an area characterised as enclosures of medieval origin and they are depicted on the 19th century mapping, although the pit is not. The earthwork is interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit that was abandoned by the mid-19th century and perhaps some time previously in the medieval period.
