The remains of roughly parallel ridges were visible as low earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1950 on the south-facing slopes west of Hembury Fort House, Upton, Buckerell parish.
The ridges were spaced approximately 8 metres apart and fell within a plot depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The earthworks are interpreted as the remains of tree planting banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage dating probably from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century. The orchard remained lightly planted in 1950.
The orchard has been cleared and the plot under arable cultivation on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010, resulting in the almost complete levelling of the banks. Nonetheless the banks survive to be visible as very slight and subtle earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
