A small area of roughly parallel ridges was visible as low parallel earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 on the east-facing slopes south of Greenhayes, Awliscombe parish.
The ridges were spaced approximately 6 metres apart and ran obliquely to the contours of the slope. The area of visible banks was small, falling within a much larger plot depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The earthworks are interpreted as the remains of tree planting banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage dating probably from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century.
The banks were visible through sparse orchard planting on aerial photographs of 1947. All trees have been cleared and earthworks probably levelled on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
