A small area of roughly parallel ridges was visible as low parallel earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 on the east-facing slopes south of Greenhayes, Awliscombe parish.
The ridges were spaced approximately 4 metres apart and ran obliquely to the contours of the slope. The area of visible banks corresponded with a plot depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The earthworks are interpreted as the remains of tree planting banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage dating probably from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century.
All trees and orchard bank and enclosure boundary earthworks have been cleared on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014, and no upstanding earthworks can be seen on images derived from lidar of 2008-2014.
The orchard earthworks were located within a hollow that might be evidence of a former extractive pit, recorded separately.
