Parallel ridges were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south-west facing slopes south of Ivedon Farm, Awliscombe parish.
The ridges, visible in plots side of a farm track, were spaced approximately 4 metres apart and ran across the contours of the slope. The visible banks fell within plots depicted as orchards on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The orchard remained lightly planted in 1947 and the earthwork banks visible through the trees. The eastern plot had been cleared of trees by 1982 whereas the western plot retained a small number of trees at this date. By 2014 the western plot was cleared of trees with the underlying banks clearly visible as earthworks, whilst the eastern plot had been replanted as a traditional orchard.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of tree planting banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage dating probably from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century.
