Summary

The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage from the post-medieval period to the 19th century, were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south-west facing combe slopes east of Lower Cheriton, Payhembury parish.

The visible earthworks correspond with a plots depicted as an orchard.

Parallel ridges were identifiable as low earthworks.

Low and narrow parallel ridges were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south-west facing combe slopes east of Lower Cheriton, Payhembury parish. The visible earthwork banks were spaced circa 6 metres apart and crossed the contours of the slope. They fell within a plot depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of tree planting banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage dating probably from the post-medieval period to the 19th century. The plot was obscured from view by dense tree cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010.
