Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks partly correspond with depicted field boundaries.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks largely do not correspond with any depicted boundaries.

Royal Air Force, 1950, RAF/541/453, RAF/541/453 RS 4099-4100 04-MAR-1950 (Aerial Photograph). SDV357845.

Linear and curvilinear ditches were visible as earthworks.

Royal Air Force, 1950, RAF/541/534, RAF/541/534 RP RAF/541/534 RP/RS 3025-3026 30-MAY-1950 30-MAY-1950 (Aerial Photograph). SDV357615.

Linear and curvilinear banks and ditches were visible as earthworks.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST1000-ST1001 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

The ditches remained visible as earthworks.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The earthwork falls within a field system characterised as Barton Fields of post-medieval date.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Linear and curvilinear banks were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1950, to the south of Higher Curscombe Farm, Feniton parish. The banks partly correspond with field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Payhembury parish, and these have been transcribed to place those not shown in context. The boundaries had been remodelled between circa 1840 and 1890 and most are not shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map.
The boundaries enclosed an area of linear earthwork banks, evidence of a former orchard, recorded separately. The hollows are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and therefore probably survive as subtle earthworks. The banks fall within a field system that has been characterised by HLC as Barton Fields of probable post-medieval date but the visible curvilinear elements might support an earlier date.
