Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • TRACKWAY (Early Medieval to XIX - 1066 AD to 1890 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthwork closely corresponds to a depicted trackway or farm track.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with any depicted route.

Royal Air Force, 1950, RAF/541/453, RAF/541/453 RS 4101-4102 04-MAR-1950 (Aerial Photograph). SDV357845.

A curvilinear eararthwork hollow was visible in two roughly north-south aligned sections.

Ordnance Survey, 1982, OS/82219 V, OS/82219 V 1092-1093 03-SEP-1982 (Aerial Photograph). SDV357675.

The linear earthworks remained visible.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST1101 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

The linear earthworks were clearly identifiable.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

Google, 2015, Google Earth Pro, EARTH.GOOGLE.COM XX-XXX-2006 ACCESSED 19-OCT-2016 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359580.

The linear earthworks remained visible.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A linear gulley was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1950 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south-facing slopes to the north of Lower Curscombe Farm, Feniton parish. The gulley corresponds closely with a track depicted on the Tithe Map for Feniton and has therefore been interpreted as a former route that passed out of use by the late 19th century. The track might have provided to extractive pits adjacent to the northern end of the route, recorded separately. The visible earthworks fall within a field system that has been characterised by HLC as probably later medieval in date and possibly based on curvilinear strip fields, and might therefore reflect a route of medieval origin.
