This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A slight earthwork bank was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 on the south-facing slopes north of Lower Curscombe Farm, Feniton parish. The visible earthwork does not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Feniton or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map but does fall within the surrounding field pattern that has been characterised by HLC as probably later medieval in date and possibly based on curvilinear strip fields. The earthwork is therefore interpreted as a former field boundary of possible medieval origin that was removed prior to the mid-19th century. The bank was not visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and has probably been levelled.
