Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks corresponded with a depicted field boundary and trackway.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthwork did not correspond with any depicted boundary or route.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 RP 3450-3451 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

Shallow curvilinear hollows were visible as earthworks.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST1103 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

Curvilinear hollows or ditches were visible as slight earthworks.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Google, 2015, Google Earth Pro, EARTH.GOOGLE.COM XX-XXX-2006 ACCESSED 19-OCT-2016 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359580.

Shallow curvilinear hollows were visible as earthworks.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Curvilinear gullies visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south-west facing slopes to the south-west of Combehayes Farm, Buckerell parish.
The gulley corresponds closely with a track and section of field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Buckerell and has therefore been interpreted as a former route and boundary that passed out of use by the late 19th century.
The visible earthworks fall within a field pattern that has been characterised by HLC as probably later medieval in date and possibly based on curvilinear strip fields, and might therefore reflect a route of medieval origin.
