Summary

A former field boundary of possible medieval origin was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 as an earthwork ditch on the north-facing slopes north-west of Buckerell Knapp, Awliscombe parish.

Three or four intersecting linear or curvilinear relict banks were visible as low earthworks.

The earthwork banks fall within an area probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Low and slightly curvilinear earthwork banks were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the south-west facing slopes overlooking the River Wolf, east of Marles Farm, Awliscombe parish.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map but did fall within the surrounding field pattern as shown on the OS First Edition map, characterised by HLC as probably later medieval in origin and possibly based on strip field cultivation.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of former field boundaries of possible medieval origin that were removed prior to the mid-19th century.
