Summary

A former field boundary of possible medieval origin was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 as a low curvilinear earthwork bank on the south facing slopes east of Awliscombe House, Awliscombe parish.

A narrow curvilinear earthwork bank up to circa 5 metres wide and up to circa 105 metres long was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards on the south-facing slopes east of Ashfield House and Awliscombe House, Awliscombe parish.
The visible earthwork did not correspond with any field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. However, it did correspond with a row of trees depicted on the OS First Edition map, possibly grown out hedgerow planting, indicating the location of a field boundary prior to its clearance and for emparkment landscaping of the field, probably in association with Ashfield House.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of a former field boundary of possible medieval origin that was removed prior to the mid-19th century.
