  • FIELD BOUNDARY (Early Medieval to XIX - 1066 AD to 1840 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with any depicted boundary.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with any depicted boundary.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

These relatively large, regular enclosures seem likely to have been laid out between C15th-C18th. Some curving boundaries may be following earlier divisions in the pre-existing medieval fields. In Cornwall these are sometimes called Barton fields

Next Perspectives, 2006, Pan Government Agreement Aerial Photograph - Digital Elevation Data, Next Perspectives APGB Elevation Data ST1202 03-JUN-2006 (Cartographic). SDV359482.

A linear ditch or hollow was visible as a low earthwork.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A narrow and shallow linear earthwork ditch up to circa 3 metres wide and up to circa 110 metres long was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 onwards on the south-east facing slopes north of Godford Farm, Awliscombe parish.
The visible earthwork did not correspond with any field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map but did fall within a field pattern that has been characterised by HLC as Barton Fields, fields of probable post-medieval date, but eith curvilinear elements might support a slightly earlier date. The earthwork is therefore interpreted as the remains of a former field boundary, possibly the continuation of a former boundary from the north, potentially of post-medieval origin that was removed prior to the mid-19th century.
The hollow or ditch remains visible as a subtle earthwork on digital images derived from elevation data of 2006.
