Summary

A former field boundary of possible medieval origin was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 as a curvilinear earthwork bank with flanking ditches on the south-facing slopes north-west of Hunthays Farm, Awliscombe parish.

These relatively large, regular enclosures seem likely to have been laid out between C15th-C18th. Some curving boundaries may be following earlier divisions in the pre-existing medieval fields. In Cornwall these are sometimes called Barton fields

A curvilinear ditch flanked bank up to circa 5 metres wide and up to circa 100 metres long was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the south-facing slopes north-west of Hunthays Farm, Awliscombe parish.
The visible earthwork did not correspond with any field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map but did fall within a field pattern that has been characterised by HLC as Barton Fields, fields of probable post-medieval date, but with curvilinear elements might support a slightly earlier date.
The earthwork is therefore interpreted as the remains of a former field boundary potentially of medieval origin that was removed prior to the mid-19th century.
