The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted pit. The deepest part of the pit closely matches the area of plot 693.

A curvilinear pit up to circa 102 by 70 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. However, the deepest sections of the pit closely correspond with a small oval plot depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe and a plot depicted on the OS First 25 inch map as an orchard.
This might support the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive pit that had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century, with the most difficult to cultivate areas subsequently utilised as part of an orchard. The earthworks related to the orchard have been recorded separately as MDV117655.
